We are revising the grading system for Band to be based on a point system. Students earn points for performances, practice, class preparation, and behavior and attitude. Concerts/Performances - each performance in a marking period will be worth 100 points. The grading scale will be adjusted for the number of performances in a marking period. Concerts are our tests and cannot be made up so attendance is mandatory. Practice Reports - they will be graded as a percentage of the time which should be used for individual practice. 6th, 7th, and 8th students' goal will be 600 minutes in a 6 week period. 5th students goal will be 900 in a 9 week period. It is important for students to work on individual skills on their own so Band time can be devoted to working on balance, blend, intonation, expression, style, etc. Class Preparation - students will receive up to 50 points for having instruments, music, and other materials ready for class. Time spent in band to get individuals missing music, reeds, etc. is wasting the group's learning time. Behavior/Attitude - students will receive up to 50 points for being positive class members. When we have a large group, disruptive students have a huge impact on class learning. Students can also earn points for: Piano Lessons - 20 Other instrument lessons - 20 Non-school performance on their Band instrument - up to 20
Here is an example of a 6th Band student Fall Cavacade - 100 Practice Report - 80 (475/600 minutes) Class Prep. - 50 Beh./Att. - 50 Piano Lessons - 20 (extra credit) ---------------------------------- Total 300 out of a possible 300 or an A
