Taiwan Trip 2024

By: Alex Zhou

As a Chinese saying goes: ”What you  learn from traveling ten thousand miles is more than reading ten thousand books.”

After years of dedication and hard work, 9 middle school students in the Mandarin program have been given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of Chinese culture, practice language skills, and share the love of Jesus Christ with the locals by taking a trip to Taiwan during this past spring break.

During 10 days, we traveled thousands of miles from the heart of West Michigan to the other side of the earth - Taiwan and cycled back to where we began. We visited 6 major cities in Taiwan and many famous attractions.  Here are some of the highlights I’d like to share with our ZCS community.

Taipei: A City of Contrasts

Our adventure began in Taipei, the bustling capital city that effortlessly blends ancient traditions with contemporary flair. The iconic Taipei 101 tower stood tall against the skyline, symbolizing the city's ambition and innovation. Exploring its vibrant streets, we immersed ourselves in the sensory delights of night markets, where the aroma of sizzling street food filled the air, and the neon lights dazzled the eyes.

Worship with Local Christians on Easter Sunday

As Easter Sunday dawned, we found ourselves drawn to a small church nestled in the heart of Taipei, where worshippers from all walks of life had gathered to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Stepping through the doors, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality, as if we were long-lost friends welcomed back into the fold.

What struck me most about the service was the diversity of the congregation – men and women of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures, all coming together as one family in Christ.  In that sacred space, we were not strangers or foreigners, but brothers and sisters bound together by a common bond of faith and fellowship. As we sang and prayed together, I was reminded of the power of faith to transcend barriers and unite hearts across boundaries of language and nationality.

Natural Wonders of Alishan

Leaving the urban bustle behind, we were greeted by the crisp mountain air and the soothing melodies of native birds in Alishan. Stepping into the forest, I was immediately struck by the towering cedar trees, some of which have stood for centuries, their branches reaching toward the sky in silent reverence.

In addition to its natural wonders, Alishan is also home to a rich cultural heritage that dates back centuries. we embarked on a journey along the Sacred Tree Trail, where ancient cypress trees, some over 2,000 years old, stood as silent sentinels of the past.

Embracing Innovation in Kaohsiung

Our next stop was Kaohsiung, a dynamic metropolis that showcases Taiwan's cutting-edge technology and forward-thinking spirit. From the futuristic design of the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center to the innovative installations at the Pier-2 Art Center, the city pulsated with creativity and innovation.

A Journey of Discovery

The journey through Taiwan was a transformative experience with memories that will last a lifetime, along with a deep appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of its people. Taiwan will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Thank you, ZCS family, for all your prayers and support before and during the trip!
