Teaching and Learning Through a Reformed Lens
By: Katy Rozema, Director of Teaching and Learning
Recently, our Board of Trustees, Leadership Team, and Staff have had a lot of conversations about teaching and, therefore, learning from a Reformed perspective at Zeeland Christian School. What a wonderful conversation to engage in! These discussions have reminded us of the deep privilege and responsibility we have as educators to align our teaching with a worldview that proclaims Christ as Lord over all creation.
In the Reformed tradition, we embrace the concept that no corner of creation lies outside God’s sovereign care. This foundational belief shapes every aspect of our teaching. It reminds us that no subject is neutral, no topic is separate from God’s Word, and no learning is complete without acknowledging His truth. From math to art, from science to social studies, each discipline is an opportunity to explore God’s creation, uncover His truths, and marvel at His intricate design.
So what does this mean? It means our classrooms are sacred spaces where faith and learning intersect. Teachers are not just instructors but mentors and spiritual guides, helping students see God’s hand in every area of study. Whether it’s discovering the order and logic of God in mathematics, appreciating the beauty and creativity of God in the arts, or recognizing God’s sovereignty in the complexities of science, we invite students to see their studies as part of God’s greater story.
What a joy it is to walk alongside students in this journey of discovering God in all things! Together, we pursue knowledge not for its own sake but as a means of loving God more deeply and preparing to serve His world.
