Legacy Event 2024
The Legacy Event celebrates the lasting impact of Zeeland Christian School across generations while raising funds to ensure current and future families have access to affordable Christian education through the ZCS endowment fund. Each year, the event features a special theme, and this year’s theme was Igniting Service.
"Igniting Service" was chosen because serving others is at the heart of our mission and community. We believe that following Christ means living a life of service — using our unique gifts and passions to bless others. The theme honors the countless ways our students, staff, and families live out this calling daily, whether in the classroom, on the playground, or beyond.
The theme also reflects the legacy of Barbara J. Newman, whose life was a powerful example of igniting service. Barb was a beloved member of the ZCS community and a true innovator with a big heart for inclusive education. She passed away in 2020 but left a legacy of passion for ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, felt seen, valued, and included. One highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Barb J. Newman Award, given in her honor. This special recognition is awarded to an individual who exemplifies Christ’s love and is deeply committed to Christian education at Zeeland Christian.
This year, we were thrilled to present the award to Mrs. Cindy Arendsen, affectionately known as “Mrs. A.” Mrs. Arendsen is a dedicated first-grade teacher who has faithfully served our school for 33 years. Her heart for her students and commitment to their growth and learning have left an incredible mark on generations of children. She models Christ’s love in her classroom and exemplifies teaching with compassion, grace, and joy. It was an honor to present her with this well-deserved award.
We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community at the Legacy Event. This year, we raised $260,000, bringing the total to $1.1 million contributed to the endowment over the event’s five-year history. These funds help us keep ZCS accessible for every family that desires a Christian education. Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and helped make this event a success. Your support helps us carry forward the mission of Zeeland Christian School for generations to come!
